Hi, I’m He Fa, an artist and filmmaker working with P4 Theater. I’m sharing a 9-minute-43-second video from our theater archive: Bodies and a Mannequin in a Purple Space.

The footage records people and a mannequin within a space enclosed by curtains. I’m interested in what a camera can preserve of the relationship between bodies, objects and the space around them, and what remains outside the frame. This is archival footage rather than a complete record of the project.

I’d appreciate your thoughts on a specific question: as a viewer encountering this material for the first time, can you follow the spatial relationship between the performers, the mannequin and the curtains? What context would help you understand the footage without overexplaining it?

Hi Frank,

Having just watched this all the way through, my first 3 questions would be:

1. What type of world are they living in for the performance.
2. What is the significance of the 3 individuals being together.
3. What attachment is there to the mannequin arm?

The answer to number 1 may answer the need to ask about the need for the curtains and the lack of anything else (ie essentials).

A very brief, almost logline, would be suffice to save the need for the questions.

I hope this helps.

Mark
