Film Financing & Investor Toolkit – Preparing Your Project for Investment

Finding investors is one of the biggest challenges in independent filmmaking. But having a great script or an impressive pitch deck is rarely enough to secure financing.

Before committing capital, potential investors may want to understand your project's budget, financing structure, ownership of rights, production plan, commercial potential, and financial risks.

A well-prepared project doesn't guarantee investment, but it gives serious conversations a stronger foundation.

To support our international filmmaking community, FilmPlatforms has created a free Investor Readiness & Financing Toolkit, an educational
PDF designed to help filmmakers and producers understand the essential elements of film financing.

Still Working on Your Pitch Deck?

A strong investor presentation is a useful starting point, but preparing the right information behind it matters just as much.

If you're still developing your presentation, explore our 10-Slide Killer Pitch Deck guide for practical guidance on presenting your project clearly and professionally.

Once your pitch is ready, the Investor Toolkit below will help you understand what comes next.

What's Inside the Toolkit?

1. Investor Readiness Checklist

Understand which documents, financial information, and project details may be requested during investor discussions.

2. Project & Financing Worksheet

Learn how to organise your project's key information, estimated budget, funding requirements, rights ownership, and development status.

3. Educational Investment Term Sheet Example

Explore common financing terms and negotiation points, including investment structure, decision-making rights, reporting obligations, and conditions that may require further discussion.

4. Recoupment & Revenue Sharing

Understand the basic principles of how film revenues may be distributed, why payment priorities matter, and why investment returns can never be guaranteed.

5. Legal & Commercial Considerations

Identify common financing risks and important questions to raise before entering into any agreement.

Let's Discuss

For filmmakers currently developing or financing a project:

What's the biggest challenge you've faced when approaching potential investors — finding the right contacts, presenting a convincing financial plan, or understanding the terms of a possible deal?

Feel free to share your experience or perspective. Your insights may help other filmmakers better prepare for their own financing journey.

One of the most overlooked aspects of film financing is what happens to the money once the film starts generating revenue.

It matters which expenses are deducted first, who gets paid in what order, and when investors can realistically expect to see a return.

These details need to be agreed upon before contracts are signed, not when the first revenues arrive. A few well-asked questions early on can prevent some very expensive disputes later.

This is incredible! I had a lot of things covered but this gave me the right insight to update files accordingly to reflect little changes that I had not thought of. Specifically, where I needed to clarify my AI use. It was noted but not in all the relevant places. I will 100% be keeping an eye out for any more of these posts. Thank you again. Strength to strength for Bloom, helped by everyone. I may have to give a dedicated shout to both sites as thanks in the book adaptations haha!

Great to hear that, Mark! It’s especially encouraging to know the toolkit helped you identify and improve specific details in your project documentation. That’s exactly the kind of practical value we hope these resources will bring to the community. Wishing you continued progress with BLOOM!
