I am a consumer interested in advocacy. I have observed that content piracy is becoming normalized.
I'd like to find ways to combat piracy. I've started composing a blog, and would like to collaborate with others
to: 1. Formulate persuasive arguments directed at consumers of pirated content to stop enabling theft; 2. Get legislation passed to provide significant criminal penalties on consumers; 3. Fund the development of software solutions to prevent piracy. Thank you.

I don’t think piracy will ever disappear completely, but the industry is already using far more advanced anti-piracy systems than most people realize.

Watermarking, fingerprinting, automated takedowns, regional tracking, AI monitoring… some distributors can now trace exactly where a leak came from.

The bigger issue is probably consumer behavior. A lot of younger viewers simply don’t see piracy as unethical anymore.

Independent films are usually hit hardest, especially when releases are delayed for months in certain territories. If people can’t access something legally, many will just pirate it instead.

Technology will keep improving, but accessibility and release strategy probably matter just as much now.

Curious how others in distribution or production see this in 2026.
