What Makes You Take a Film Project Seriously?

You receive a new film project.

You know almost nothing about it yet.

What is the ONE thing that makes you stop and think: this is worth a closer look?

The concept?
The screenplay?
The team?
Cast?
Budget?
Audience potential?
The way it’s pitched?

And perhaps the more interesting question:

What is the ONE red flag that makes you lose interest almost immediately?

Writers, producers, directors, sales agents, distributors, investors - I’d be interested to hear how differently we see this from different sides of the industry.

No long answers needed.

One green flag. One red flag.

Genre
  1. General / Multiple Genres
Red flag - All about them, no manners, no interest in you or what you also have.

Green flag - Discussions, offering to simply hear about your work too, having more than just an idea.

For me, the green flag is when the creative ambition and the business reality seem to understand each other. A strong idea is great, but if the team can also explain who the audience is, what the realistic budget level is, and where the film could sit in the market, I pay much more attention.

Red flag: when every question about budget, audience or distribution is answered with (we’ll figure that out later.) Too often, later is already too late.
